Late in 1991 i was feeling unlucky and adrift - unable to find financing to make films. Jonathan Rosenbaum, visiting from Chicago, showed me a VHS tape of pixelvision work by Sadie Benning. Within a week, i learned that you could order pixelvision cameras from a place in Ohio for 35 dollars apiece. i ordered four. Three of them worked.
The rawness of the pixel image - the restless grain, the unresolvable focus - mirrored my sense of reality at the time. At any rate, i took a cue from Sadie Benning. I wanted to make movies with that level of directness, immediacy, Honesty, irony.
It can be argued whether my luck, and my filmmaking, improved much since then. The pieces collected here traveled the film festival circuit and were treated kindly by critics. It would be a case of false modesty for me to pretend that they were not made to last.
